The Spirit of the Spider

In January 2021, I dreamed of a large house where men were busy helping the residents move. One of the movers in the house was attempting to lift a heavy fish tank, placing his hand on the inside of its glass. When I saw that he was unaware of the lurking spider, I called out, “Be careful. There’s a big black spider right by your hand.” About that time, his hand touched the spider, but the spider did not seem bothered by his touch. At first glance, it looked fake, but I knew better.

Without warning, the location of the spider changed. It was now much bigger, but still contained in a large round glass tank. The tank was bubbling from the outside of a house placed precariously on the edge of a mountaintop. Along with the spider were several people held captive in the tank, one being my neighbor and her dog. As I stood inside the house looking through the glass windows, the spider began jumping along the walls of the tank, trying to escape.

This created a frantic response in the others. First, the dog jumped over the tank only to fall to its death, then my neighbor followed. I remember thinking, “No. Do not be afraid of the spider! It cannot harm you,” but nobody held captive in the tank could hear me. One after another, every person jumped to their death until there was nothing left in but the spider.

The dream shifts once again, and I find myself downstairs right outside the house. By this time, it was dark, and I was to meet a woman for a meal at the dining room table. When I asked if she knew what had been going on upstairs, she replied, “No.” As I entered, men were walking around the talking as if everything were normal, and I wondered if they had any knowledge of the spider upstairs. Their demeanor did not show concern, so I felt they were ignorant of the disturbing events.

As illogical as it might be, I sat down for dinner with the woman, and we shared information with one another. I had a feeling in my heart that this had been a great conversation, and it put my mind to rest before I walked away.

Interpretation

The house represents the church. We live in a dark time where evil is running rampant upon the earth. Why? What has caused such evil to exist, operating right outside our doors? The man in the dream is a helper used to move things out of the church. The fish tank is the place where God’s people reside, but as the people were being moved, the hand of this gentleman couldn’t get a handle on the spirit that had been operating within the church.

The Bible states in (Luke 11:24-26) When the unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.

The Bible also lets us know that the spider skillfully grasps with its hands, and it is in kings’ palaces. (Proverbs 30:28) Know this—the spirit of the spider does not give up easily. It holds on and hangs out in the king’s residence (the church)! It has grown in size and is wreaking havoc upon the people.

I can hear your comments now! “Diane, really? Rarely does a black widow spider cause death to its victims. So, what is the purpose of this spirit?” Let’s examine the dream a bit closer, shall we? You miss the point. The spider’s bite is not what killed the people inside the tank. It was their fear of the spider that caused them to jump over the edge to their death. The fear caused them to be irrational and make unwise decisions. What God wants us to understand is that He has not given us a spirit of fear but one of power, love, and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)

It’s a terrible thing what fear can make one do. When we believe the enemy’s lies, we lose the power and authority given to us by God to defeat the enemy. According to (Luke 10:19), it cannot even harm us, let alone cause death! Isn’t it time for us to claim our authority in the name of Jesus and stop the enemy from terrorizing God’s people?

How do we do this? The church must unify and come together, much like the woman and I did at the end of my dream. The woman represents the church, and, remember, we shared information. Pretend for a moment that I am the woman at your table. I have come to share the information God has given me to help defeat the enemy. We must come into agreement, like a mighty army, and fight this evil wickedness running wild on the earth! We have sat back far too long and allowed the works of the enemy to destroy us from within.

God has provided explicit instructions of how we are to prepare for the battle with the spider. (Ephesians 6:11-13) says, Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

We are in spiritual warfare. Let’s take our fight to the heavenly realm, decreeing and declaring the Word of God! Our feet are bigger than that spider. We have Christ within us, and we can put that spider under our feet and squash him. I don’t know about you, but I am encouraged. God has exposed the tricks of the enemy and given the church the strategy to defeat him. So, reach for your armor, my friend, and follow me into battle!
